Obesity and Bariatric Medicine

 

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers obesity to be a worldwide public health crisis. The U.S. contributes to this catastrophe with nearly 70% of our population being overweight or obese. The National Cancer Institute says that obesity is second only to tobacco as a preventable cause for cancer.

36% of the U.S. population is obese, nearly triple what it was fifty years ago. So we have to ask ourselves, what’s happening? What has changed? What are the contributing factors to today’s obesity epidemic and what are we doing to combat it?
